Dr. Melani McAlister will be visiting the University of Alabama campus on Thursday, January 23, 2020 to present a talk in room 205 in Gorgas Library.
Talk Title: “The Persecuted Body: U.S. Evangelicals and the Politics of Suffering”
Dr. McAlister is a Professor of American Studies and International Affairs at George Washington University. She has recently published The Kingdom of God Has No Borders: A Global History of American Evangelicals (Oxford, 2018) which explores how US evangelical Christians, white and black, have constructed their understandings of — and relationships with — people in the Middle East and Africa. She is also the author of Epic Encounters: Culture, Media, and U.S. Interests in the Middle East since 1945 (rev. ed. 2005, orig. 2001) and is co-editor, with R. Marie Griffith, of Religion and Politics in the Contemporary United States (2008).
