Dr. Clint Peinhardt Will Be Visiting the UA Political Science Department
October 18 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm
Dr. Clint Peinhardt will be visiting the University of Alabama Political Science Department on Thursday, October 18th to give a talk in ten Hoor 346 from 1-2:30 pm.
Dr. Clint Peinhardt will be discussing “Multinational Corporations and Political Violence”. Multinational corporations (MNCs) must account for many political risks, including the threat of targeted violence, which they may play a direct role in mitigating via their actions in host states. Most political science research only indirectly accounts for directed attacks on firms. In this paper, we show that the determinants of terrorist attacks against MNCs mirror broader determinants of transnational terrorism, and we provide the first broad-scale evidence that local MNC relationships also influence the likelihood of attack. Our results suggest that existing approaches to studying political risk will need to be supplemented with new data and more targeted theorizing to incorporate the rising importance of non-state actors as a source of political risk.
