Dr. Alexandra Délano Alonso will be visiting The University of Alabama Political Science Department on Friday, December 6th to present a talk from 3:00pm-4:30pm in ten Hoor 346.

Talk title: “Transformative Practices of Solidarity across the Central America-Mexico US Corridor”

Abstract: In a context of heightened border controls and xenophobia this presentation examines grassroots initiatives across the Central America-Mexico-US corridor that offer alternative frames to respond to the realities of migration, including its root causes and impacts on both people in contexts of mobility and the communities that they settle in, temporarily or permanently. I examine the work of shelters, sanctuary coalitions and deportee organizations that goes beyond urgent responses in the name of hospitality. Instead, they offer principles and practices to address broader questions of equality and justice that also implicate local communities.
